Standards for the Assessment of Reading and Writing
Case Studies: National Monitoring of Education
One important function of assessment is to monitor national changes in the education of young people so that the various stakeholders, including educators and the public and their representatives, can take any necessary actions to improve the quality of education. The following case studies present two examples, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in the United States and the National Educational Monitoring Project (NEMP) in New Zealand. Following the descriptions of these two national assessments, Table 1 compares the ways in which they meet (or do not meet) the assessment standards.
