Council/Affiliate Network

A shared vision defined by communities

In 60 countries and a 1,000+ communities throughout the world, groups affiliate with the International Reading Association through chartered councils. Operating at local, state or provincial, regional, and national levels, councils enhance the IRA experience by providing:

  • Connection. Joining a diverse group of professionals who share a passion for literacy, instruction, and student achievement, can expand professional relations and transform formal and informal learning opportunities.
  • Leadership outside classroom walls. Teaching can be an isolating career, but volunteer-led professional organizations develop and grow leadership skills that can be applied to a variety of areas.
  • Community building for a literate future. Councils engage whole communities in literacy awareness campaigns through recognition programs, community service, and special projects.

For information about creating a new council, contact the Division of Council and Affiliate Services.

2010 – 2011 Council Officers

IRA relies on completed Officer and Annual Report Forms to ensure effective communication with council leaders throughout their term in office. During 2010-2011, council leaders will receive emails from councils@reading.org addressing issues and events directly related to council programs and services. IRA also relies on these forms to demonstrate the strength of the council network and the impact councils have on literacy in their communities and beyond.

The forms are electronic this year, so they are not downloadable, nor can they be saved “in process.” Please review the forms in advance to ensure that you have all the information required* (forms cannot be submitted unless all sections designated with * are complete). Many new items have been added!

A filer will need to know the IRA membership numbers for at least three officers. A new officer can find her or his IRA member number on a membership card or label to an IRA journal or newspaper, or by contacting the IRA Coordinator for the state or province, or by contacting customerservice@reading.org.

To verify IRA council numbers, the filer can use IRA's online directory.

If a council has fewer than three IRA members among its officers, please contact councils@reading.org for assistance.

Each filer will receive a return email of the completed form which can be used in states and provinces where a paper copy of the report is needed. IRA will provide IRA Coordinators with copies of submitted forms and will include a council leadership report that can be accessed online.

Local and special interest council reports are due by April 15. State and provincial reports are due by May 3.
