Call for Editors
The International Reading Association is accepting applications from qualified members interested in serving as editors of The Reading Teacher. This prestigious editorship functions as a two-person team, consisting either of two coeditors or of one editor with one associate editor, with a term of five years.
The application process includes two phases. In the first, prospective editors are asked to familiarize themselves with editor and IRA roles and responsibilities and to submit the application materials described below. Application deadline is November 30, 2009. Based on its review of Phase I applications, the RT Editor Search Committee will identify candidates to move on to a Phase II round of application materials and interviews, scheduled for January 2010.
To apply (Phase I):
Read the detailed description of editor and IRA roles and responsibilities.
Submit the following three documents, attached to an e-mail cover message addressed to RTEditorSearch@reading.org. E-mail must be received by midnight (EST) on November 30, 2009.
- CV (short form) for each applicant in the two-person team, clearly demonstrating each applicant’s standing in the field through a record of publications, grants, ongoing research, and teaching of children up to age 12.
- A five-page (maximum) description of the “ideal” issue of The Reading Teacher. In this document, imagine you are assembling the first issue of The Reading Teacher under your editorship. It should include between six and eight articles that will appeal to the journal’s primary audience of school-based educators, but the content should also be of interest to secondary audiences of teacher educators, researchers, and others interested in literacy teaching and learning of children up to age 12. In your description of this ideal issue, be sure to include
(a) Names of the teachers, researchers, or others in the field who would be the ideal authors, the topics on which they would write, and the reasons for your selections
(b) The use you would make of the online version of the journal to augment the issue
(c) The constituencies you are aiming to reach
(d) Why this particular issue will be a “must read” for anyone active in the field - A statement from your institution, indicating the ways in which it will support your editorship during the five-year term.
