IRA Arbuthnot Award

The IRA Arbuthnot Award is an award to honor an outstanding college or university teacher of children’s and young adults’ literature. Nominees must be Association members, affiliated with a college or university, and engaged in teacher and/or librarian preparation at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

Award Recipients

2014
Frank Serafini

Dr. Frank Serafini is an author, illustrator, photographer, musician, and an Associate Professor of Literacy Education and Children's Literature at Arizona State University. In addition, he was an elementary school teacher and literacy specialist for twelve years in Phoenix, AZ. He received his Master's degree in Elementary Education and his Ph.D. in Reading Education at Arizona State University. In 2003, he received the Distinguished New Faculty Award, and in 2007 the Outstanding Teacher Award from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In 2009, he received a Foundation Award at ASU for his Excellence in Teaching. He has published six books with Heinemann, including: The Reading Workshop, Reading Aloud and Beyond, Lessons in Comprehension, Around the Reading Workshop in 180 Days and Classroom Reading Assessments. In addition, He has recently published Interactive Comprehension Strategies: Fostering Meaningful Talk About Texts with Scholastic. Frank's new book is entitled: Reading the Visual: An Introduction to Teaching Multimodal Literacies with Teachers College Press. In 2008, he began writing and illustrating a series of non-fiction picture books focusing on nature with Kids Can Press. The Looking Closely series contains books about the desert, garden, pond, rainforest, shore and forest. In 2009, Looking Closely Along the Shore won an International Reading Association's Teachers' Choice Award, and Honorable Mention from the Society of School Librarians International.
