IRA NICHD Reading Writing Report

The relationship of reading and writing is often thought of as being one that is significantly and deeply linked. It is so fundamental that it seems to have escaped broad based inquiry. Now with the development of the Common Core State Standards the role of writing in instruction is expanding. But what is the nature of the relationship of reading instruction to and with writing instruction? The International Reading Association (IRA) and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) have had a long-standing relationship of developing independent, expert panels to explore and suggest possible areas of further inquiry. In 2011 an independent panel was convened to make recommendations on future research on the relationship of reading and writing instruction. The following is their report; neither IRA nor NICHD review these reports; their recommendations and observations are strictly reflecting the agreement of the panel members.
