The UNESCO International Reading Association Literacy Prize was founded in 1979 and is presented each September in conjunction with International Literacy Day celebrations. The 2008 winners will be announced in August 2008.
The Prize rewards the services of institutions, organizations, or individuals displaying outstanding merit and achieving particularly effective results in the fight for literacy. It also raises public awareness for literacy programs already in progress.

Awarded to The Community Education Administration Centre, Longsheng Ethnic Minority Autonomous Country (People's Republic of China).
The Centre is based in a remote area of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The region has a large ethnic population with a high illiteracy rate among women. More details are available on the UNESCO website.
