Located in southeastern Massachusetts between Boston and Cape Cod, Bridgewater State College has two graduate programs in reading and literacy education. Both programs lead to certification as a reading specialist with the Massachusetts State Department of Education and are fully accredited by the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education (N.C.A.T.E.), having met the Standards for Reading Professionals developed by the Professional Standards and Ethics Committee of the International Reading Association. Starting fall, 2002, masters programs in Literacy (Birth-6th grade, 5-12 and Birth-12th grade), Early Childhood and Childhood, and Literacy/Special Education (one joint program, one dual program) will meet new NY teacher certification requirements. (The Early Childhood and Childhood MS can be obtained entirely online, other MS programs can be obtained either on campus or in combination with online study. Advanced programs (CAS, Ph.D.) prepare students for research and university positions, as well as literacy-related careers (e.g., state education departments, college teaching, publishing industry).

Canisius College
The Literacy Education Master of Science Degree Program prepares students to meet New York State requirements for certification as a literacy specialist. Course sequences in the program (33 credit hours) provide for certification in one of two areas: pre-K through grade 6 or grade 5 through grade 12. Additional coursework (9 hours) qualifies candidates for certification in both areas.
Each concentration has a component that involves working with children in a clinical setting, specifically testing and tutoring in the area of literacy skills (reading and writing).

The Graduate School of Education offers a 36 credit Master of Science in Education degree, which is NCATE accredited. The program builds on initial teacher certification and leads to certification as a Literacy Specialist: Birth Grade 6 or Grades 5 12. There is a strong emphasis on integrating theory and practice including two supervised practica. In addition, the program addresses first and second language learners, reading-writing connections, and promotes literacy leaders who are reflective practitioners.
